Migrant deaths increase in US detention centers under Trump

Twelve migrants have died in U.S. detention centers since Trump began his second term, including two suicides. Reports cite extreme overcrowding, with detainees exceeding ICE's capacity by 140%.

AhlulBayt News Agency: Since the start of Donald Trump’s second presidency in January, at least 12 individuals have reportedly died in U.S. immigration detention centers. The deaths, including two by suicide, have been reported by outlets such as The Independent.

Among the deceased are citizens of Canada and Cuba. These fatalities occurred in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities, which have been ordered to detain approximately 3,000 migrants across the U.S., aiming to deport millions annually.

The detention centers are currently overcrowded, a factor that experts believe has made it difficult to meet the basic needs of detainees.

According to The Independent, as of mid-June, ICE was holding more than 56,397 migrants—about 140% of its intended capacity.

Paul Chavez, a director at Americans for Immigrant Justice in Florida, described the conditions as the worst he’s seen in two decades. “They were never great, but now they’re horrendous,” he told The New York Times.

The rising number of deaths could make this the deadliest year for ICE-run facilities in decades.

Experts warn that if the current pace continues, the number of fatalities could reach 24 by year’s end, approaching the record of 28 deaths set under President George W. Bush.
